Movie Conventions Research: The Unforgivable
The final movie that I will be researching for thriller conventions is The Unforgivable. "The Unforgivable" is a psychological thriller movie released in 2021. It tells the tale of Ruth Slater, a woman who was given a 15-year sentence for an offense she didn't undertake but is now free. She is compelled to face her past monsters and clear her name as she works to reconstruct her life.
What elements of thriller does this movie have?
- Setting that is mysterious or ominous, the story takes place in a grimy, realistic rendition of Los Angeles, which creates a strange and ominous backdrop for the action. The sketchy underside and run-down areas of the community add to the total feeling of risk and suspense. Tension-filled pacing, To keep the viewers interested, the film uses tension-filled pacing. Gradually revealed details and plot twists keep the viewers speculating and heighten the tension as the story develops. High stakes, as Ruth works to resolve her name and start over, the stakes in the movie are high. Both her liberty and her public image are in jeopardy, and as the plot develops, the risks only rise. Ruth's character is an iconic illustration of a protagonist from a thriller film with a difficult past like my last movie convention research on luckiest girl alive. Her remembrances of her time in jail and the incidents that led to her guilty verdict haunt her, and these flashbacks proceed to influence the way she acts and thinks.
What elements of thriller did the movie have that I like?
- I entirely love the use of tension-filled pacing in this movie. The use of the story gradually revealing the true intentions of the movie is an amazing element. The pace of the film is tense in order to keep viewers interested. Slowly revealed details and plot twists keep the audience curious and heighten the tension as the story develops. This has to be my favorite element of this movie.
What elements of thriller did the movie have that did not appeal to me?
- The use of the dark lighting in some scenes of this movie did not appeal to me as I have mentioned before in past blogs. When lighting is too low it can be frustrating to me because it can be too hard to see. I completely understand the use of low lighting but I just personally do not like it very much.
