Movie Conventions Research: Spiderhead

The first movie that I will be researching for thriller conventions is Spiderhead. "Spiderhead" is a science fiction thriller movie released in 2022. In a cutting-edge prison operated by a phenomenal visionary who tests on his subjects using brain configuring drugs, two former prisoners relate while dealing with their backstories.

What elements of thriller does this movie have?

- A common convention of the thriller genre is a suspenseful plot which is used in this film.  This movie has a complex plot that keeps the audience guessing until the end. These stories frequently revolve around mysteries, crimes, or conspiracies, and they occasionally take unanticipated turns or plot twists that keep the viewers on the edge of their seats. In this specific movie the plot is based on a mystery. The viewer is kept on the edge of their seats by plot twists and unpredictable turns that are common in thrillers. This movie uses this element to the greatest amount that it can. Plot twist are a great convention used in thriller films and this movie was a great way for me to understand them better. Psychological thriller components, the film delves into the characters thoughts and how they respond to the test they are put through, which heightens the psychological complexity of the piece. Mystery and secrecy surround the genuine nature of the test as well as the goals of those who are conducting it. The characters' quest to learn the facts about what is taking place to them heightens the suspense and tension throughout the film. Action scenes, the film also features action scenes that up the tension and exhilaration, such as a prison escape and a vehicle chase.

What elements of thriller did the movie have that I like?

- I like about all of the conventions used in this movie. Specifically the use of plot twists, I enjoy these a lot because they introduce you to something you would have never expected to happen. This movie uses that element extremely well which is why I love it so much.

What elements of thriller did the movie have that did not appeal to me?

- To be entirely genuine, there was not a single aspect of this film that I disliked. The various conventions used did not overwhelm one another. Overall, the film was fantastic and did an excellent job of representing the thriller genre.
